Mumbai has a heritage that dates back to period even before Portuguese and English came here. The World Heritage site of Elephanta is the best example of it. Buddhist caves of Kanheri hidden in the Sanjay Gandhi National park, Hero stone of Eksar near Borivali are pieces of age-old beauty. There are many sites of historical and cultural importance spread across Mumbai city, suburban Mumbai and Mumbai Metropolitan area. Colonial rule has left its footprint on the current city prominently visible at the town side.

In this Mumbai Heritage Walk series we plan to explore various heritage aspects of Mumbai be it food, buildings, traditions, crafts, archaeological sites, customs etc.

The first heritage walk is planned near CSMT station area on 16th Feb 2020. Please visit this space for more details.

Think Art Deco, and you’d instantly think of Miami, Paris or New York City. Most locals and tourists in Mumbai are unaware that the city hosts the world’s second largest collection of art deco buildings! With the inclusion of the Oval-Maidan precinct as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS), Mumbai’s Art-Deco buildings have found new life. Mumbai’s Art Deco buildings include residential properties, commercial offices, hospitals and single screen movie theatres, including the popular Regal and Eros cinemas. The road next to Oval Maidan, on the Eros side; Sir Pherozeshah Mehta Road, MG Road and Marine Drive are areas where you can see some of the most beautiful Art Deco buildings. Pherozeshah Mehta Road has the office buildings like United India Building and New India Assurance; a residential stretch and includes old apartments such as Green Fields, Sunshine and Empress Court. Marine Drive is considered to be the second longest stretch of Art Deco, after Miami. On this walk we will trace the evolution of architecture in colonial Bombay city, with a focus on the Art Deco buildings. Sights we will cover on the walk: •          Regal cinema •          Eros cinema •          Oval-Maidan precinct •          Marine Drive read more read less
