Today if you go and visit areas around Panipat where the third battle of Panipat was fought in 1761, there is a community called Rods. These Rods have proudly identified themselves as descendants of Marathas who were left over in the north after Panipat Battle.
There are mainly 3 battles that were fought at Panipat
- 1526 Babar vs Lodhi,
- 1556 Akbar vs Hemu,
- 1761 Abdali vs Marathas.
The third battle of Panipat is the most important among these. Warfare started to heat up in north when Dattaji Scindia laid his life on 10 Jan 1760 at Buradi ghat on the banks of river Yamuna near Delhi. This is the fifth invasion of Abdali, the Afgan ruler. Every invasion he has moved the border of his kingdom into India. If this battle was not fought, Abdali wanted his kingdom border to extend up to Sirhind, place near to Chandigarh.
City of Panipat has a memorial built to commemorate 3 battles fought here. There is an obelisk in the memory of 3rd battle. The kala amb memorial park is believed to be main battle ground. Panipat museum houses some artefacts related to battles. Maratha main camp was at fort Panipat. Today the place has Gandhi Park.
Every year 14th of January locals gathers at Panipat in thousands of numbers to remember those who lost their lives during Panipat battle. It is celebrated as Shourya Divas.
Other attractions at Panipat are Hemu Samadhi, Kabuli bag masjid, Devi temple, Salar gunj gate, Bu ali shah kalandar tomb, Babri masjid, Lodhi tomb.
