How this hill station got its name?
Folklore says that the word Lonavala is derived from the Sanskrit word “Layan”, which means to relax. The locals in that era used to speak “Prakrit” language and called the resting place as “len”. Also, the entire region was rocky, so they called a series of rocks as “Avali” and this is how the name “Lonavala” was framed.
When to visit?
Though you can visit this hill station anytime around the year, the best time to visit it is between October to May. Most people throng to Lonavala between June to September as well, however, it is advised not to visit it during these months as the place experiences heavy rainfall during this time.
Popular places worth visiting
There are numerous lakes in and around Lonavala. However, Tugauli, Pawna and Bhushi lakes are worth visiting. Karla and Bhaja Caves, situated at a distance of 11km from Lonavala are also prominent places. These rock-cut caves that date back to the 2nd century offer an insight into the ancient Buddhist temple art. Ryewood Park and the Rajmachi Wildlife Sanctuary are an absolute delight for nature lovers.
Certain locations in Karla hills and Duke’s Nose Point are popular rock-climbing places, one can explore. Khandala located at 5km away from Lonavala is another intriguing hill station you can visit when travelling from Mumbai towards Lonavala.
