Overview

The Alang–Madan–Kulang (AMK) Range Trek is one of the toughest and most rewarding adventures in the Sahyadris, taking trekkers deep into the rugged heart of the Western Ghats. Located in the Kalsubai–Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary in Nashik district, this mountain trio stands tall with steep rock walls, narrow ridges, dense forests, and dramatic cliffs that make the trek both challenging and unforgettable.

Geographically, AMK forms a massive and visually striking ridge line.

  • Alang is known for its vast plateau, ancient rock-cut water cisterns, and breathtaking views.

  • Madan features thrilling rock patches, technical climbs, and exposed traverses—making it one of the most adventurous forts in Maharashtra.

  • Kulang, the tallest of the three, offers spectacular panoramas of surrounding peaks including Kalsubai, Ratangad, Harishchandragad, and the entire AMK range itself.

Historically, these forts date back to the Satavahana and Maratha eras, used strategically due to their height and isolation. Their natural defenses and tough terrain made them important watchpoints and shelter forts during the Maratha empire. Remnants of fort walls, caves, water tanks, and stone steps still echo the region’s ancient past.

The AMK trek is known for its technical rappelling sections, steep climbs, and rocky patches, requiring proper equipment and expert guidance. What makes the experience even more special is the overnight camping on vast plateaus under a sky bursting with stars—far away from city lights.

The combination of geographical beauty, historical significance, and pure adventure makes the Alang–Madan–Kulang trek a bucket-list experience for seasoned trekkers. It offers everything—thrills, culture, wilderness, and breathtaking mountain landscapes—wrapped into one iconic Sahyadri expedition.
