Day 1: Guwahati to Shillong via Umiam Lake
Your adventure begins as you land in Guwahati, the gateway to the Northeast. From here, a scenic drive takes you through lush hills and pine-lined roads towards Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. En route, make a stop at the tranquil Umiam Lake, where the blue waters and surrounding greenery offer the perfect first glimpse of the state’s natural beauty. Spend some time by the lakeside before continuing onward to Shillong. Upon arrival, settle into your hotel and enjoy a relaxed evening in this colonial-era hill town known as the "Scotland of the East."
Day 2: Shillong Local – Laitlum Canyon, Mawphlang, Elephant Falls & Police Bazaar
Today is all about exploring the natural and cultural gems around Shillong. Begin with a drive to Laitlum Canyon, a lesser-known but awe-inspiring spot where the valley opens up to panoramic views and dramatic cliffs. Then, venture into the mystical Mawphlang Sacred Grove, an ancient forest steeped in Khasi legends and biodiversity. After soaking in this sacred natural world, visit the multi-tiered Elephant Falls, where the roaring water crashes through dense greenery. Wrap up your day with an evening stroll through Police Bazaar, Shillong’s lively commercial hub, ideal for shopping local handicrafts and trying out local street food.
Day 3: Shillong to Dawki via Krang Shuri – Riverside Camping at Shnonpedeng
Leave behind the buzz of Shillong as you head deeper into the Jaintia Hills toward the crystal-clear waters of Dawki. Along the way, stop at the majestic Krang Shuri Waterfall, where you can take a refreshing dip in turquoise pools or simply admire the beauty of cascading water against a rocky backdrop. By late afternoon, reach Shnonpedeng, a peaceful riverside village near Dawki. Here, check into your riverside campsite along the emerald waters of the Umngot River. As the sun sets, enjoy a bonfire by the riverbank under the starlit sky—an experience that’s both grounding and magical.
Day 4: Boat Ride in Umngot River & Travel to Cherrapunji via Mawlynnong
Wake up to the gentle sounds of the Umngot and set out for a morning boat ride on its crystal-clear waters. The river is so transparent that boats appear to float in air, creating a surreal experience you’ll never forget. After this, begin your journey to Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on Earth. En route, stop at Mawlynnong, famed as the cleanest village in Asia. Explore its charming bamboo pathways, visit a living root bridge nearby, and climb the Sky View tower for panoramic views of Bangladesh. By evening, arrive in Cherrapunji and check into your stay, nestled amidst rolling clouds and misty hills.
Day 5: Explore Cherrapunji – Caves, Waterfalls & Hidden Gardens
Cherrapunji welcomes you with dramatic landscapes and lush green cliffs. Start your exploration with a walk through the stunning Mawsmai Caves, with its maze of limestone formations lit by gentle yellow lights. Then head to the iconic Nohkalikai Falls, India’s tallest plunge waterfall, and listen to the roar as it drops from misty cliffs into a blue-green pool. Later, take a short trek to the magical Wei Sawdong Waterfalls, a three-tiered cascade tucked away in the forest. End your day exploring the lesser-known but serene Garden of Caves, a natural wonder full of mossy boulders, tiny waterfalls, and cave passages. Return to your accommodation and enjoy a peaceful night amidst the rain-kissed wilderness.
Day 6: Trek to Nongriat – Home of the Double Decker Living Root Bridge
Today is the highlight for nature lovers and trekkers. Drive to Tyrna, the starting point of your journey into the heart of Meghalaya’s living landscapes. From here, descend around 3,500 steps through forested trails and hanging bridges to reach Nongriat, a remote village famous for its incredible Double Decker Living Root Bridge. Crafted by generations of Khasi villagers using living tree roots, this bridge is a marvel of natural engineering. Spend your day exploring natural pools and waterfalls near the village, and stay overnight in a basic yet cozy homestay, immersed in the simplicity of village life.
Day 7: Rainbow Falls & Return to Shillong
Wake up early for a moderately challenging but rewarding trek to Rainbow Falls, named after the frequent rainbows that form in its mist. The trail winds through deep forest and rocky paths, with stunning scenery all around. After spending some quiet time by the vibrant blue pool at the falls, return to Nongriat for lunch. Post-lunch, begin your ascent back to Tyrna, and drive back to Shillong by evening. Check into your hotel for one final night in the city before your trip concludes.
