Overview

We at Trikon take you to Chipun in Kokan which is one of the most peaceful and alluring places in Kokan. Our main purpose to visit Chiplun in kokan is to witness a pulchritudinous bird which is a stunning little bird, with bright colours like yellow, red and bluish-black plumage. This unique bird is known as The Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher. The Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher is also known as Black-backed Kingfisher or Three-toed Kingfisher. Just 14 cm in size, the Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher famously known as “ODK” among bird watchers. Due to its small body size, this bright coloured bird is also called ‘Jewel of the forest.’ It has elegant colourful feathers like Magenta pink, Neon Blue, Red, yellow, purple and white. The Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher nests near small forest streams at foothills of forest edge. The nest is a very interesting process to watch. The nest is constructed in a mud mount of banks of the forest streams. ODK feeds on many species of small vertebrates, including forest skink, crabs, tadpoles and insects.

Black-backed Kingfisher or Three-toed Kingfisher is a species of bird belonging to the alcedinidae family. These species is a widespread resident of lowland forest, endemic across much of the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. These birds feed themselves on aquatic animals and hence sources of water are very important to Black-backed Kingfisher. The monsoon season is the main breeding season for the Three-toed Kingfisher and hence we at Trikon call you for a birding tour in Chiplun during this monsoon season.
